Kid Rock Throws His Hat in With Romney
by Deborah Kay Corey
You probably already know by now that Mitt Romney won the primaries in Arizona and Michigan. In fact you probably found that out last night. The win(s) gave Romney a chance to really shine before Super Tuesday next week.
Despite the nasty mud thrown during the race in Michigan between Santorum and Romney, Romney came out of it with strong support from the Catholic vote. The Catholic vote may have tipped the scales in the state, although it is also Romney’s home state.
Something you may have missed however this week was all American badass singer Kid Rock’s endorsement of Mitt Romney. The singer chose to endorse Romney after meeting with him on February 24th and performed at a rally for him on Monday night.
So, Ron Paul got Kelly Clarkson and Mitt Romney got Kid Rock. One could suppose it would depend on your music tastes as to which performer YOU might want an endorsement from on YOUR race for president.
It’s hard to know if singers/musicians/performers really have any influence on presidential races. But Wyclef Jean famously went for President Obama in 2008. Pitbull supported Sen. John McCain, huh, you would think that would have helped the senator’s race. Pitbull is very very popular. But maybe nothing was going to get McCain that extra edge in 2008.
Performers appeal most to the youth demographic which tends to be more apathetic when it comes to voting.
Music and entertainment have not been traditionally associated with serious political influence although bands have often played at major events. Whatever the case singers/musicians have started to play a much bigger role in organized campaigns over the last decade. They are no longer just artists on the side expressing their ideas and opinions through songs or random comments. And maybe that is a good thing.
